As with all mountain bike tyres they all have their strengths and weaknesses but for the Maxxis Ignitorthe main strengths are that they are very fast and work extremely well on hardpacked and dry trails so they are particularly suited to the cross country rider and the endurance riders due to the low rolling resistance.
Under slippery conditions they can be a little more challenging to work with but still a fun ride if you don’t mind the back end moving around a little.
I would say their weakest spot is mud and clay. Due to the formation of the tread pattern they are not that great at getting rid of the mud, saying that they still perform well but there and more suitable tyres for these conditions, so maybe a good choice for the summer months.
With Maxxis being a premium brand then you can expect to pay a premium price, but before you make your purchase take care to get your sizing right as the one thing about this tyre is it usually comes up a bit narrower than expected so maybe take the next size up. I done a little research on the price and as I am writing this the best price is here: Maxxis Ignitor
So to recap, if you are looking for a fast rolling, grippy tyre that is great on hard packed trails and cross country/endurance then the maxxis ignitor is a good choice.
Picking the right tyres can make a massive difference to how your bike will respond, but with so many to choose from, do you go tubeless, are you riding in the winter? It can be a tough decision.
So here are some things to think about before making the decision and our recommendations on the best mountain bike tyres.
Tubeless – have some big benefits, they can be run on lower pressures and offer more side wall protection giving better performance. You can also stick a spare in the pack as you can fold them up. However they can be a pain in the ass to fit if you don’t get a clean seal when out on the trail, they are also more expensive. Personally I am still using tubed tyres as I am not that bothered with weight, and a spare tube in the backpack can usually get me home if I run into trouble.
Seasonal changes
Some of the guys I ride with can change tyres on the day depending on the weather but I tend to use Bontrager XR4′s for the winter but I have just got a new ride that has come with Kenda Nevegal Stick E on and I have been really impressed with them so far, they are a great all rounder if you just want to put a set of tyres on and not have to swap them out if the weather is poor.
If you are looking for the best performance than I would take a look at Maxxis Ardent as most people I know have a set of these in their arsenal. Another great all rounder that runs fast on any surface and has an awesome amount of grip, swap them out in the winter though if there is a lot of mud on your trails. Another great Maxxis tyre is the Maxxis High Roller, one of the most expensive and highly respected tyres, if you can afford them buy them! The Maxxis High Roller is available at Amazon at the moment from 22.99 which is a great price!
I can also highly recommend Schwalbe Rocket Ron tyres, they are a big volume tyre and offer great added comfort if you are doing long distance, they also offer massive traction. Be a little careful on rocky area’s as the sidewalls are a little thin.
